Druidry Lesson 5~ The Sidhe and Other Spirits

Some questions for you to think about:

Do you think these spirits exist, or are they just old stories told by people to explain natural events?
I do think that they exhist just as much as anything else. There are many things, beings out there that can not be explained, that we do not see, and that we just know are there. Spirits, ghosts, or fairies, there are many names for what we know are there.

Do you think house spirits are entities that lived in an area before the house was built, or only migrated there afterwards because they liked the house (or people in it)? Do you have any ideas why house spirits are often perceived as being naked?
I am, at this point, unsure about this one. I k now that there are there. The spirits that i have felt all of my life have always seemed to have been part of the house or area where they reside. I do believe, however, that spirits can remain after a structure is gone. It doesn't make sense that they would leave or disappear just because someone tore the house down. This then leads me to believe that some spirits, fairies, ghosts, or Sidhe, do remain in an area even if their "abode" is no longer there.

As to their clothes, I have no idea. I had never heard this before and any spirits I have seen have always been clothed. This makes me wonder if what we are talking about there are what I have seen.

Have you ever seen, heard or otherwise experienced something that might have been a nature spirit? Is it possible that some places, perhaps through pollution or terrible events happening there, might be totally bereft of any spirit presence at all? Have you ever been to a place that felt totally dead?
I have never been anywhere that felt completely dead though I have been places that feel empty. I do not think that natural disasters, pollution will empty a place of it's spirits though I do wonderful if maybe they can change. Some leave to a new better area and others come to the damaged area. I do believe that there are spirits who come to help clean up areas or parts of our mother earth that have been damages and I like to try to help these by planting in these areas, sending energies, and helping to build them up again.

I do think that terrible events can bring undesired spirits as the negativity can be a draw for other negativity. I have been places, to house, buildings, are areas, what complete  repel me and do not allow me to enter without detriment to myself and my being.

Practical task:

If you have not already done so, try and make contact with whatever spirit dwells in your local river, lake or other body of fresh water. Through meditation, divination or whichever other techniques you prefer, try and get a name for the watery creature, and a sense of its temperament. Try leaving it a gift of food or drink to establish friendly relations. You might want to consider creating a small altar exclusively for his, her or its use (avoid the mistake of automatically assuming all water spirits are female in manifestation).

If your local water source is heavily polluted, full of chemicals and human waste ~ it may be taken as a friendly gesture if you spend an hour or three cleaning up a stretch of it (take suitable safety precautions so you don’t turn yourself into an accidental offering!).

It never hurts to research beforehand. Find out if this is an ancient river, or a man-made one. Does it follow its original course, or has it been diverted? What names has it been known as over time? What is its history of use ~ was it ever used for fishing, as a transport canal etc. Where does the river (or lake, stream, etc) originate? You could always visit the springs that feed into it. Does this body of water supply your household, or does the stuff that gushes out of your taps come from elsewhere?

Of course, if you think river spirits are just metaphors, then this exercise may seem a tad pointless! However, give it a try with an open mind and see what happens.
While I contact spirits regularly, I have not done anythings specific to this task. I will add to this when I do.

Druidry Lesson 4~ The Ancestors and the Living Land

Some questions for you to think about:

1. What means would you feel comfortable using to try and sense the will of the spirit of a place?
Coming upon new places, I can feel, much of the time, the spirit of ta place. I know if it is a  happy or an unhappy place and have found that there are many places I can not go. Now, with what I have learned over the last year, I would meditate, maybe try to speak with spirits about or that occupy a particular place to get more information. Before, I just avoided those "bad places".
2. How far back can you trace your family tree? How much do you know about the lives of your grandparents, great-aunts, long-dead cousins etc?
I can only trace my family tree back 3 generations in my mom's side and one not at all beyond my dad as we are not really sure who he really was (lots of lies). I know very little.
3. How do you view humanity’s relationship to the land? Are we its masters, its guardians, just one species amongst many, or something else again?
I believe that we are part of the land. We all work together to keep us all healthy and safe, humans and land and everything on/in it. All is alive and deserves respect and caring.

Practical Exercise

Try to meditate and make contact with the spirit of your house. If possible, ask it what it’s name is. See if it manifests in a particular way ~ does it look human, animal, or something else? Do you sense any particular aroma, sound, taste etc linked with it?

Having made contact, create a small shrine to it somewhere in your house. Ask what the spirit would like on the shrine, and if it has a preference for any particular type of offering ~ a certain food or drink, for example.
I have not done this yet but will add it when I do.

Druidry Lesson 3~ The Gods and Goddesses

Some questions for you to think about:

How do you see the Gods? Do you feel they are real or symbolic? Are there many separate Gods, or are they all aspects of something else? Are there any Celtic gods or goddesses you have read about, with whom you feel a connection? Can you see ways in which stories about the Gods might be used to convey moral lessons, ideas about the natural world, advice on how to live or behave?

I think that the Gods are very real, the God and Goddess, with many different jobs and names. I am, at this time, unsure if there is just one of each or many. Still working on this. There is either a God and Goddess and they have many beings or personalities that meet our needs or they have maybe demi Gods who have different characteristics and powers who assist us with our needs. I am still working on this, not sure which and really, at this point, not sure that it really matters.

My own personal connection is what makes me want to believe there is just one God and Goddess. When I make my connections, no matter the purpose, I feel it is the same connection to the same being.

Stories about the Gods and Goddesses have been used for many many years to teach morals, give advice, and to teach new ideas. What a great way to teach and learn and this is how it has been done since the beginning of time, before written language, and beyond.

Practical task:

Pick an Irish, Welsh etc myth and read it aloud to a friend (ideally one with the same interests.) Discuss the ideas in the myth, and how you each feel about the themes and events. Which characters appeal to you most, and which least? Pick one of the god-like figures in the tale, and discuss how the story might seem from their viewpoint. Why did they act they way they did? Were there any particular animals, items, images associated with them in the myth? If so, what do you think they mean?

Have a go at creating an image of that character in a medium with which you are comfortable ~ you could write a poem about them, or paint a picture, or model an image in clay, carve something in wood, compose a song about them, embroider a banner etc. Try to think about the story and the character as you work in whatever form of artistic expression you most like.

I have not done this yet but will add it once I have. :-)

Hello

While I have been working slowly through the lessons, I haven't been getting them on here. Plan to do some of that today.

My brother and his wife have decided to come visit for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. I am so excited. They have already booked the hotel and everything. My only wish now is that the kids could come with them. That would be so amazing!

Well, just wanted to drop a note. Will add my next few lessons on at some point throughout the day. Love and light to all.
